"Prisoners of the Kremlin": Results of MIP's Educational Project

On 3 June 2019, a press conference summarising the implementation of “Prisoners of the Kremlin,” an educational project by the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine that included meetings with students in nine Ukrainian regions, took place at the press centre of the Ukrinform news agency.

“Educational projects are an extremely important area of activities for the Ministry. They include the project “Prisoners of the Kremlim”—a series of visits by the Ministry’s team to Ukrainian educational establishments with the presentation of the eponymous documentary film. Personally, for me each such visit is a serious personal experience in understanding what patriotism should be like,” the State Secretary of the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine, Artem Bidenko, was quoted as saying.

During the 2018-2019 academic year, 37 meetings with Ukrainian students were held, which took place in Mariupol, Odesa, Ostroh, Poltava, Rivne, Ternopil, Kherson, Cherkasy, Chernivtsi, and Kyiv.

Olena Zhemchuhova, the coordinator of the project, said that it sought to show young people that live in peace and can study because there are people over there who fight for their peaceful lives.

“When it all began in 2013-2014, first-year students, who were 16-17 years old, hardly thought about what had happened and why that was happening. ‘Hybrid warfare,’ ‘prisoners of the Kremlin,’ ‘hostages,’ ‘temporarily displaced people,’ ‘aggression’—these all are notions that are difficult to comprehend for an adult, so they must necessarily be discussed with the youth,” said Volodymyr Zhemchuhov, the Hero of Ukraine.

On 21-22 May, the meetings with students were held in Chernivtsi; on 25-26 April, in Cherkasy; on 9-11 April, in Poltava; on 27-28 March, in Rivne; on 12-14 March, in Mariupol.

On 11-13 December 2018, the meetings took place in Kherson; on 14-16 November 2018, in Ternopil; on 23-25 October, in Odesa.
