MIP Congratulates Roman Sushchenko on 50th Birthday
The staff of the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine congratulates Roman Sushchenko, an Ukrinform correspondent, who was illegally convicted in Russia, on his 50th birthday.
“Roman, it is a pity that you have to celebrate your third birthday in succession in Kremlin imprisonment. I want you to know that we are doing our best for you to come back to your family as soon as possible. I wish you strength, patience, and courage. Happy birthday!” said Yuriy Stets, Minister of Information Policy of Ukraine, in his greeting.
The Ministry has also nominated Roman Sushchenko for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
On 30 September 2016, Roman Sushchenko, an Ukrinform correspondent in France, was detained in Moscow, where he was on a private journey, in violation of international norms. On 7 October 2016, he was charged with espionage.
On 4 June 2018, the Moscow city court sentenced Mr Sushchenko to 12 years of high-security prison. On 12 September, the Supreme Court of Russia declared the decision “lawful.”
In November of last year, the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia notified the Ukrainian Embassy on Moscow that Mr Sushchenko had been transferred to Colony No. 11 in the Kirov region (the town of Kirovo-Chepetsk, the village of Utrobino).
