MIP Presents Radio Programme on Learning Ukrainian

On 20 August 2018, the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine presented a radio programme on learning Ukrainian titled “Ukrainian is Easy!” at the press centre of Ukrinform, a news agency. It will be broadcast on Hit FM radio every day at 6:30pm.

“Promotion of the Ukrainian language should not be imposing, you cannot force anyone to do it. Nor can you prohibit speaking another language. This does not work. You need to inure the love of language through such events, through Ukrainian music and songs, through Ukrainian poems. You need to talk to each Ukrainian in a way that he will talk to us in Ukrainian,” the Adviser to the Minister of Information Policy of Ukraine, Maryna Sobotiuk, was quoted as saying.

The programme will be delivered in a convenient way: during one minute, Oksana Bas-Kononenko, a professional philologist who hosts the programme, will teach listeners to speak their native language correctly and elegantly and explain meanings of various Ukrainian words and phrases.

“Many people want to speak Ukrainian but do not dare. I believe that it is just by means of this brilliant, unintrusive, and simple format that we will be able to help,” says the host, who works as Associate Professor at the Chair of the Ukrainian Language and Applied Linguistics of the Institute of Philology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Anna Lisovska, content director at Hit FM, stressed that the programme will be broadcast in prime time, just as people come back home from work. “They will be paying attention not to traffic jams but to a nice programme about the Ukrainian language. The format allows them to listen to it on road and remember,” she added.

The project was initiated by the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine pursuant to the Decree by the President of Ukraine “On Urgent Measures to Strengthen the State Status of the Ukrainian Language and Promote the Establishment of the Single Cultural Space of Ukraine”.
