Bidenko Pays Working Visit to Latvia
On 4 March 2019, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine, Artem Bidenko, paid a working visit to Latvia.
Within the framework of his visit, Mr Bidenko met with Vice Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia Dagmāra Beitnere-Le Galla and discussed the issue of ensuring the information needs of the Ukrainian community in Latvia.
In the course of the meeting with Inese Voika, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Inesa Ikstena, Head of Latvia’s Delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the sides noted effective cooperation between Ukraine and Latvia in the OSCE, including support of resolutions on Ukraine, and the issue of ensuring balanced information campaigns during national elections.
Mr Bidenko also met with Jānis Siksnis, Director of Baltic Centre for Media Excellence, to discuss the implementation of joint training projects for Baltic and Ukrainian journalists.
In addition, the State Secretary of the Ministry took part in a discussion titled “The Role of Writers in the Fight against Propaganda and for Free Speech in the Post-Truth World,” speaking of the Ministry’s role in countering Russian propaganda in the occupied territories and fending off Russia’s information operations in Ukraine.
Other speakers at the discussion included Ukrainian and Latvian writers—members of PEN Ukraine and PEN Latvia Andrii Kurkov, Ilmārs Šlāpins, and Inga Gaile; and Mariia Holubieva, a Latvian MP. The event was organised by the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia with the support of PEN Latvia and PEN Ukraine. It was attended by foreign diplomats accredited in Riga, journalists, and civil society activists.
