Mejlis Deputy Head Ilmi Umer arrested and released after giving written pledge not to leave Crimea

- According to Ilmi Umerov, the FSS charges him with encroachment on Russia’s territorial integrity after a live TV interview he gave to ATR, a Crimean Tatar TV Channel, in mid-March. However, Ilmi Umerov cannot pose any threat to Russia’s territorial integrity because he does not consider Crimea part of Russia.

- On May 12, Ilmi Umerov was taken to an FSS branch in Simferopol. Mejlis First Deputy Chairman Nariman Jelyal and Emil Kurbedinov, Ilmi Umerov’s lawyer, followed Umerov immediately.

- After being taken to the FSS branch, Ilmi Umerov was made to give a written pledge not to leave Crimea, following which an FSS investigator sent detectives to Bakhchisarai to search Ilmi Umerov’s  house.

- After looking into a procedural decision submitted by the FSS’s investigative department, Crimea’s Prosecutor's Office charged Ilmi Umerov with making public appeals and actions aimed at ‘changing the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation’.

- Nikolay Polozov, Akhtem Chiygoz’s lawyer, said earlier that the judges deliberately procrastinate review of the February 26 case, hoping that people would be less interested in high-profile cases during summertime.

- It was reported earlier that Akhtem Chiygoz, Mustafa Degermendzhi and Ali Asanov - three of the six men charged with involvement in mass riots during the February 26, 2014 rally outside the Crimean Parliament - are now being held in Simferopol’s pre-trial detention center #1, while another three - Eskender Kantemirov, Arsen Yunusov and Eskender Emirvaliev – are awaiting sentences at home after being released on bail.
